Common Problems and How to Fix Them

Is your garage remote giving you trouble? Before booking a service call, try a few quick checks — many remote issues are easy to fix on your own. At MiniFob, we help people copy and replace garage remotes every day, and we’ve seen the most common issues firsthand.

Here’s a simple guide to help you figure out what might be going wrong and how to fix it.

1. The Batteries Might Be Dead

This one sounds obvious, but it’s the most common reason remotes stop working. Garage remote batteries usually last about two years. If it’s been a while since you changed them, that could be the problem.

Quick test: try opening your garage with the wall-mounted button inside. If the door opens, the remote’s batteries are likely dead — swap them out and see if that fixes it.

2. It Might Be Damaged

Dropped your remote recently? Even if it looks fine on the outside, a fall can damage the internal parts. That kind of damage might not be fixable — in most cases, the best move is to replace it.

At MiniFob, we can help with a quick and easy copy of your existing working remote, so you’re never stuck without a backup.

3. Signal Issues

Garage remotes only work within a certain range — usually 20 feet or less. If you’re close to the door and it still doesn’t work:

  • Check if anything is blocking the signal
  • Make sure the garage opener’s antenna is clean and pointing down
  • If the antenna looks damaged, you may need a technician to take a look

4. Lock Button Accidentally On

Some garage systems have a lock feature. If the lock button on your wall panel was pressed by accident, your remote won’t work until you turn it off.

Just press the lock button again and try the remote after that — simple fix!

5. It May Need Reprogramming

Sometimes the signal between your remote and your opener just stops syncing. That’s why it’s always smart to have a spare remote on hand.

If you have a working garage remote, we can copy it for you in just minutes. And if you bring both the working one and the non-working one to FobToronto, we’ll try reprogramming it for you.

If you don’t have a backup yet, now’s the time — we can help at MiniFob or our headquarters location at FobToronto.
